Overhaul on Monjasa

We received a request from Monjasa to assist with a propeller overhaul on one of their oil tankers. Subsequently, we sent our skilled and experienced service technician, Jens Gundersen, to Algeciras in southern Spain. The oil tanker Monjasa Leader is a vessel in the large and heavy category with a deadweight of 63,579 tons. Therefore, it might sound like a drop in the ocean when we say that the propeller itself weighs 48 tons. Each propeller blade weighs 4.7 tons, and the coupling, located in the engine room, weighs 7.2 tons. It required some finesse to replace the heavy coupling, and this was done by cutting a hole in the ship’s side to gain access to the coupling. Our service technician did not tackle the heavy overhaul alone, as he collaborated with both the shipyard in Algeciras, Monjasa, and MAN Energy Solutions.
