Overhaul of Wind Orca
At the end of 2021, West-Marine via Semco Maritime got a large thruster task in their hands. This task was to be carried out for the Danish shipping company Cadeler, which has previously sent the twin ship, Wind Osprey, past the port of Esbjerg, where both Semco Maritime and West-Marine are geographically located.
This time it was about the WTG installation ship Wind Orca.
The task was similar in several respects to the previous work on Wind Osprey, which was past Esbjerg in the early autumn of 2021. However, the scope of the task was slightly increased. In contrast, four Brunvoll thrusters on the Wind Osprey had to be overhauled, while the Wind Orca had to have all eight thrusters overhauled – both the front Brunvoll Azimut thrusters and the rear ABB Azipod thrusters.
The collaboration was again with technicians from Semco Maritime and Brunvoll A/S – and this time also with technicians from the company ABB.
Once again, there was great success with the good cooperation between the companies regarding the overhaul of the large thrusters. West-Marine’s technicians were therefore professionally proud when, at the beginning of 2022, Wind Orca could once again leave Esbjerg Harbor and resume the work of installing offshore wind turbines around Denmark and the rest of the world.
For West-Marine, it was, as usual, our CTO Alex Fjord Christensen, who had the full overview of our part of the work together with the company’s other skilled and competent service technicians.
From Azimut – To Azipod
The overhaul of the front four Brunvoll Azimut thrusters mounted on the Wind Orca proceeded like the latest task on the Wind Osprey.
The new thing was that the four rear ABB Azipod thrusters should have overtaken the propel pak cans on all four. However, one of the large ABB Azipod thrusters had to be replaced and West-Marine assisted Semco Maritime and ABB with this.
These ABB Azipods are some proper mop boys and weigh in the region of 48 tonnes each. They each have an effect of a whopping 3.5 MW. The propeller itself weighs 4.6 tonnes.
“West-Marine has assisted with a professional and competent team on the thruster overhaul, which has ensured the safe completion of this task in collaboration with Semco Maritime’s project team,” says Semco Maritime’s Senior Project Manager, Søren Hede-Jensen.
