Overhaul on Monjasa

We received a request from Monjasa to assist with a propeller overhaul on one of their oil tankers. Subsequently, we sent our skilled and experienced service technician, Jens Gundersen, to Algeciras in southern Spain. The oil tanker Monjasa Leader is a vessel in the large and heavy category with a deadweight of 63,579 tons. Therefore, it might sound like a drop in the ocean when we say that the propeller itself weighs 48 tons. Each propeller blade weighs 4.7 tons, and the coupling, located in the engine room, weighs 7.2 tons. It required some finesse to replace the heavy coupling,...

A ride on the blue waves with Fulton

Last week, we had the honor of inviting a number of great partners to a fantastic afternoon at sea aboard the more than 100-year-old three-masted schooner, Fulton. The afternoon, in addition to excellent weather at sea, offered engaging conversations, socializing, and a unique insight into a ship and project that we are proud ambassadors for. This afternoon, the average age on Fulton was possibly raised a bit. The ship Fulton is usually filled with young, sea-worthy individuals and is therefore also known as the youth ship. Our guests...

Overhaul on Drejø II

We received a request from the shipping company Erria A/S to perform an overhaul of one tunnel thruster on the Drejø II, which was scheduled to dock at ORSKOV YARD in Frederikshavn. And of course, we could. Our two service technicians were tasked with removing the ship’s tunnel thruster, which would then undergo a complete overhaul. The disassembly itself posed a challenge, but it was successful thanks to assistance from a crane truck and Ørskov – our partner on the task. After disassembly and in agreement with Ørskov and Erria, the thruster was transported to our...

Iceland Patriot: Overhaul and Maiden Voyage

At West-Marine, we thrive on tackling complex maritime challenges, and our latest mission aboard the Norwegian vessel Iceland Patriot was no exception. One of our new apprentices was offered the opportunity to join the Iceland Patriot, and he immediately jumped at the task. Alongside an experienced colleague, Mads embarked on the journey aboard. Their task was to replace the drive shaft between the engine and the hydraulic pump on the ship, which has a total of 6 of these complex systems. These systems are capable of delivering impressive pressures of up to approximately 1500 bar. But to...

Cattleya in Skagen

We are delighted to share our latest collaboration with the skilled team from Karstensens Skibsvaerft A/S in Skagen regarding the servicing of the trawler Cattleya. As part of the service, we precisely replaced the steering tube packing gland. To accomplish this, it required the dismantling of the lower gear, intermediate shaft, as well as the steering tube and support tube. To ensure optimal performance, new bearings and seals were installed, and we also replaced two hydraulic steering motors. This replacement was carried out due to detected internal leakage in the hydraulic motors. Vores...
